At the age of sixteen, searching for opportunities in Depression-era America, Emil
and one of his brothers began a journey across the country. Having little money,
they traveled mostly by hopping trains, and they lived the hobo life. Emil
recorded his travels, the cities and towns, and the many shantytowns where he and his
brother stayed. After a year, Emil and his brother made their way back to Pennsylvania.
Emil got a job in a factory and remained in Pittsburgh for several years until the flood of
1936. Emil then decided to seek his destiny in Hollywood, California.
