Although Emil did a lot of work in films, he always maintained a "day job" to pay the bills and support his seven children. And even though he was divorced in the early sixties, Emil fought for custody and raised his three youngest children as a single father. Only after the last child moved away and got married in the late seventies, did Emil allow himself to retire from his job as a civil engineer. In 1978, Emil even got re-married as well, to Edith Weber, a former girlfriend he had known forty years before. Through the eighties, Emil would on occasion take a small acting job, just for the fun of it. Because of his association with The Three Stooges and their exposure on television, Emil experienced a surge in popularity over the past few decades, and he welcomed the attention and affection he received from fans worldwide.
